Biography

Sophia Adamowicz was born in Sheffield on the autumn equinox. Straddling the signs of Virgo and Libra, Sophia proved to be equally obsessional and indecisive. An only child, with no friends except her black and white cat, she peopled her world with imaginary characters and spent her days writing sinister stories inspired by the many horror films she watched. Little has changed since then.

Sophia has always been fascinated by the pre-modern world and its stories. After completing a degree in English at the University of Cambridge, she specialised in Medieval literature and history, and was awarded a PhD from the University of East Anglia in 2015.

It was while training as a teacher that Sophia decided to enter the Festival of Thought competition, run by Salt publishing house. Her winning story of 1000 words grew over the years into her first attempt at a novel. She has since published several short stories and nonfiction pieces, and secured a deal with Ruadán Books in 2025. Her debut novel, The Brink, is scheduled for release in 2027.

In 2023, Sophia co-founded Artemis Writers. She also continues to teach 1:1.

In her spare time, Sophia likes to run, play the guitar, piano and double bass, enjoy delicious meals cooked by her partner and dote on her pets, Milquetoast, Prufrock and Piranesi.
